We saved £100 on our Heat Pump install (as I'm sure I've told you!), so now's your chance to do the same
My Experience (Don't worry, the Octopus Heat Pump Referral Code You came for is further down!)... Kinda ignore the code though because apparently it's a link now!
Octopus have redefined the Heat Pump by bringing out their own range of models
Octopus don’t only provide their own in-house models of heat pump (the Cosy 6 and Cosy 9), they also offer a range of Daikin heat pumps, but you’re encouraged to go down the Cosy path where suitable for your home. The Octopus Heat Pump Referral Code on this page is applicable to either the Daikin or the Cosy range, so you’re all good either way.
How Much Is This Going To Set Me Back?
First things first, you’ll want to get your fixed price quote. You can do this on Octopus’ website in a matter of seconds, you just put in your address, and you now get 2 different prices. This model came in literally the day after I got my quote, so I can’t comment too much on it, but it looks pretty self-explanatory to me, and I’m sure your sales rep will discuss the options with you before you proceed.
After you pay a refundable £200 deposit, you’ll be asked to book in a home survey. During this, your house will be measured and mapped, and heat loss calculations will be performed for each room in the house. These will be used to decide the model of heat pump most suitable to your property, and if any radiators need to be replaced. This may vary depending on the size of your home, and when it was built, but for us we were advised around 3 hours. In practice I have no idea how long it was, but it wasn’t disruptive or long at all.
Post-Survey
Typically the next day, you’ll be contacted by the Octopus Energy Services sales team to go through your Sales Agreement. If you haven’t already, it is at this stage you must mention your referral code, prior to signing the document. My referral link is https://tech.referrals.octopus.energy/uyLa4pgO, and this will get you, at present, a £100 discount from your Heat Pump installation, meaning you can rack up the savings even earlier.
Once you’ve signed your Sales Agreement, you’ll be raring to go! Now you just sit back and wait for the Install Team to get in touch. They’ll send you over a reminder of any pre-install requirements which will have been mentioned to you at both the survey phase, and the Sales Agreement phase, and tell you what happens next.
What Does Happen Next?
Step 1
Install Readiness Activities
Firstly, you’ll need to start planning for any Install Readiness Activities which are your responsibility. Octopus will help you with any of these if required.
Step 2
Your ENA Application
Octopus do this bit – this is simply notifying your DNO that you’re having a heat pump installed. Your DNO will then advise if any work is required on the grid or your meter. Response time is expected to be 7-14 Days.
Step 3
Claiming the BUS Grant
Again, another one for Octopus, the BUS grant is what’s really enabling so many people to go green with a heat pump, and is a £7,500 voucher towards your heat pump install. This is requested around 3 months prior to install, to avoid it expiring.
Step 4
HIES Workmanship Warranty
You are also advised at this stage that Octopus will be applying for your HIES Workmanship warranty, and you will receive the policy directly from the insurer once your install has taken place.
After That?
Following this, I sent a barrage of questions to my Install Co-ordinator, some of the more technical ones she went away and checked for me, and I got an answer to those within a couple of days. We had a response from the DNO after about 1 working day, which is a super fast turnaround, as the timeframe given was 7-14 days. Our DNO is ESP Utilities Group, and I seem to recall they were pretty fast to sort us out following our solar panels going up so we could export, and likewise quick to upgrade our main fuse when we bought the property. Your mileage may vary!
The following day we were asked a couple more questions, primarily just as an Octopus customer, where do we want the gas capping, at the meter or at the boiler (free either way). We opted for at the meter, so we can start our gas-free journey and begin to save £100/yr on the gas standing charge. We were also given a date to book in, about 40 days from the date it was provided, which I think is reasonably soon.
The next day I received an email from Ofgem for approval of the BUS grant, which I completed. Octopus did make me aware to keep an eye out for this, but do make sure you don’t miss it!
We completed our required works (move an outdoor socket and ensure the rads and cylinder are accessible), and awaited our install.
Prior to our install we had a call from the lead installer on the Friday, who checked if we were still all good to proceed, and if we had any questions, and let us know what was going to happen to set expectations, letting us know when to expect to have hot water and when to expect heat, etc.
Day 1
Pre-Requisites
On the first day, the kit arrived around 7:30, and Octopus started to show up on site from about 8:00, the first day started off with going over the plan, checking everything was as expected, and replacing the 2 radiators we were having changed.
Day 2
Getting Started
On Day 2 the cylinder had been swapped out for the new one, and by 16:30 we had hot water from the immersion plugged into a 3-pin socket to tide us over for the night. Work began on the pump base/soak away. Our gas was capped off on Day 2.
Day 3
Pump Install
The pump was sited and wired in by day 3, and looked to have been mostly plumbed in, all that seemed to be left was the lagging and final connections, other than the actual commissioning. Some auditors from Octopus showed up and to be honest probably just slowed things down but I guess their eagerness to audit themselves is a good thing.
Day 4
Lagging
Day 4 was almost entirely lagging and patching holes (from where the boiler was removed). By the end of the day we had a working system, just with some app bugs due to it not being fully commissioned yet.
Day 5
Complete!
Day 5 was only around half a day, purely tidying, and completing commissioning of the system, good to go and saving money already!
And that’s about it! Octopus did come back a week or two later to make a couple of alterations to the wiring, but it’s been plain sailing and money saving already for us, excluding the cost of the induction hob and electrician to fit it and remove the outdoor socket, we already made back the cost of the heat pump in less than a month from selling the old boiler and cylinder.
Did you skim the page because I've already told you all this in person and you missed the referral code?
That’s it! That’s your code. Well, it’s my code, but once you’ve used it to get your own Heat Pump, you’ll be supplied with your very own Octopus Heat Pump Referral Code. For reference, there is no Octopus Heat Pump Referral Link, just like there isn’t one for Solar. These can only be provided by the actual code (like above), and needs to be provided to your sales rep.
Install Pictures Pending!
