I don't shut up about how much Octopus' Smart Tariffs Have Saved Us Do I?
Moving to Octopus Energy was the first thing I set out to do when we moved into our new house, and I couldn’t get away from Scottish Power fast enough.
Why Octopus?
The most important thing to consider is what you’re currently paying per unit for your gas and electricity. Whilst Octopus is a no-brainer for me, it may not be the perfect fit for you.
My main benefit with Octopus is 7p/kWh electricity overnight, which when coupled with solar & battery storage, means that the most I ever pay per unit is 7 pence.
Even if you don’t have solar but do have an EV or hybrid vehicle, you can get onto Octopus Intelligent Go or Octopus Go if your charger/vehicle isn’t supported by Intelligent just yet.
It’s a quick and easy process to move to Octopus Energy, and the bit that you need to do takes all of 5 minutes, the lengthy part is waiting for your previous supplier and Octopus to get the switch sorted.
Initially, you’ll have to go onto a regular tariff, such as Octopus Flexible – this won’t yield you any real savings (other than your £50 from the Octopus Energy Referral Code you came here for!), but it’s just the first step to the savings. Octopus need to ensure that you have a compatible and contactable smart meter, that can send half-hourly reads, before you can move onto a smart tariff.
What's Next?
So you’re all setup, Octopus now supply your gas and electric (or just the one), now’s time to start making your savings.
There are various tariffs that may or may not be better for you, and some are for those that aren’t afraid to take a risk, such as Agile or Tracker – Octopus have a handy guide here which will try to help you make a decision on which tariff is best for you.
There’s also a table at the bottom of this page, which I do agree with – that being said, I think it’s a little incomplete, especially as there’s no mention of an Export Tariff for the EV & Solar options:
The thing I’d make clear is that from my experience, Intelligent Octopus Go combined with Outgoing Octopus provides the best results for me, and allows all my green tech to work whenever I need, always at a low cost.
